Bills coach Doug Marrone caught the eye of the football world when he announced the Bills are planning to start Jeff Tuel at quarterback in their season opener, but that will only hold true if EJ Manuel remains unable to play.
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — As the Bills continue practices in Orchard Park, we've yet to see EJ Manuel - who is recovering from a minor knee procedure.
Head coach Doug Marrone says even though he hasn't been on the field with the team, he is coming along.
"Like I told him, I said I have no problem if he comes out and works out when the media is out here. That’s what he’s doing we don’t need to hide it. He’s coming back and he’s doing everything he can. He’s progressing," Marrone said.
"I believe it’s seven or eight days after the procedure and he’s 100 miles an hour right now."
In the meantime, the focus is on Jeff Tuel and Matt Leinart in Thursday's preseason game. Doug Marrone didn't tell us exactly who is starting in that one.
"All of our players are going to be ready to play, but we're going to be smart about it," he said.
Presumably that means that Tuel will get the start. Of course, both players are expected to see significant time with plenty to gain.
"I think just earning the trust of my teammates and building the relationships that I haven't been able to with some of the ones over camp," Tuel said.
"I'm just trying to prepare and study the offense. I'm not looking past anything but Detroit and just getting ready and learning this offense is really all that I'm focused on," said Leinart.
While fans will be focused on two quarterbacks, they never thought would be in this position.
