ORCHARD PARK, NEW YORK - Even when Sammy Watkins is absent, he is the talk of Bills Organized Team Activities.
"Sammy, he's awesome, man.," Bills wide receiver Marquise Goodwin said. "He's just what this team needs."
"He's a great player," Bills running back C.J. Spiller said. "He's as good as advertised. He works hard at his craft. He comes out here and he competes. I'm pretty sure he's wishing he could be with us instead of being out there for the rookie premiere, but that's just one of those things you just have to do and we look forward to getting him back out here next week."
Watkins is out in Los Angeles, California to attend the NFL's Rookie Premiere Event.
Fellow fresh face, Mike Williams, was at Day Two of OTA's. His play-making ability is what attracted the Bills to trade for him in early April, but it is his beard that seems to be turning the most heads.
"Playoff beard," Williams said. "As long as I got this beard, the Bills going to be in the playoffs. So I'm not going to cut it... I'm trying to get it real, real long so that means we're deep in the playoffs. I'm trying to get it to grow."
And with Watkins and Williams jumping on board to help second-year quarterback EJ Manuel, even though it is very early in the process, this offensive unit feels they are ready to take off.
"Everybody, you know your role," Goodwin said. "And at the end of the day, we're fighting for each other, fighting for one goal and that's just to get wins for the team."
Spiller added, "It can be special, but we know we got to put in the hard work. We got to continue to build that chemistry and to continue to get to where we can play at a fast tempo. And once we do that, I think, really, the sky's the limit for this offense. Because they gave EJ all the weapons that he need and now it's time for us to just go out there and play to the best of our ability."
Ability that is just scratching the surface.
