Sunday in New Orleans, Bills head coach Doug Marrone will go head to head with Sean Payton for the first time. Marrone was part of Payton's staff before heading to Syracuse.
Five years have passed since Marrone served as offensive coordinator in New Orleans. Although Marrone departed before the Saints Super Bowl win over the Colts, he did play a roll in turning the franchise around and learned a thing or two along the way.
"Sean and I, we had a working relationship and we had a close friendship," Marrone said. "To be close to him and see what he went through as a head coach was obviously very helpful."
"Doug was someone who I met before and he was working and still under contract with the Jets and was finally able to get out of his contract," Payton said. "Had a chance to interview him and felt really comfortable with his expertise and his ability to teach. Since then, that initial staff was pretty special and he's someone that I've stayed in touch with throughout the years, when he went to Syracuse and now on to Buffalo and he's doing a good job there."
