Evaluating the Bills

  • Text size: + -

As the Bills get set to close out the season with the final three games, you can bet they'll be trying to find a way to finish out games down the stretch.

That was never more apparent than on the Rams' final drive of the game on Sunday. Sam Bradford, who's unit had been held at bay all day, orchestrated an 84 yard game-winning drive - to negate what had been a solid afternoon for the Bills defense. Prior to that drive, the Bills had limited the Rams to 201 yards and seven points. The silver lining shows a Bills defense that has greatly improved since the beginning of the season - just too little too late.

"Towards end of the season, the second half of the season, we've sold ourselves as a defensive front, as a defense," said defensive tackle Marcell Dareus. "All together we're gonna draw a line in the sand. I guess that's what we did. We wanted the team to follow. We wanted the offense to follow of course. It's two different units. We're doing the best we can."

"We've just got to go out there, and we've got to learn how to finish the game," added tight end Scott Chandler. "We've got to get that killer instinct that you see some of these teams have. We don't have it. We've got to find it."

Entering the year, optimistic Bills fans were thinking playoffs. Perhaps realistic fans were hoping to see some steps forward in the team's rebuilding process. And now, 13 games later, I think a lot of fans are demanding answers. Chan Gailey and Ryan Fitzpatrick are under plenty of pressure - fans wondering if they're headed in the right direction with this group. Predictably, Fitzpatrick says yes - the temperment's still good, and a lot of the shortcomings are on him.

"A lot of that falls on me and I am 100-percent fine with that," said Fitzpatrick. "I think I have not played as well as I wanted to play this year. Unfortunately, our win-loss record is where it is and a lot of that falls on me. If you look at who we have, the nucleus of guys we continue to put together and build on that says a lot for where we are headed."
