HAMBURG, N.Y. -- "What a tragedy,” said shopper Joanne. “You’re not safe anywhere anymore."

It started as a regular Saturday morning for a handful of employees at Toys R Us on McKinley Parkway who reported to work around 4 a.m.

When they couldn’t reach the store manager on the radio system, one went to his office.

That's when the 35-year-old manager was found bleeding.

"It looks like they were so busy doing their work that the hour this guy did it, he was able to sneak around in the store being undetected by the people that were in there, including the victim," said Hamburg Police Det. Scott Kashino.

"There’s nothing that indicated to me regarding any type of fight within or dispute early this morning," said Hamburg Police Sgt. Thomas Best.

A SWAT team was called in as a precaution.

Rural Metro officials say the manager was taken to Mercy Hospital with stab wounds.

He later died.

Police say surveillance video showed the suspect wearing a Florida Gators 2007 Championship hat entering the store and office around 4:36 a.m.

Seven minutes later the video was disabled.

However through the images, police learned the suspect got in through the front doors.

"It looks like they were maneuvering the mechanism in the door and that looks like how they got in," said Kashino.

Many shoppers came to the store on Saturday unaware of the incident and they say they were just stunned by the news.

"I had to get a present for my grandson's birthday tomorrow and I was shocked when I saw it all roped off and I asked somebody in that truck, and they said somebody was killed there this morning," said Joanne.

"We just drove out here to go to Toys R Us and found all kinds of cops," said shopper Sandra Saltsman.

"Hamburg is a very nice area, it's quite a surprise," said shopper Bruce Saltsman. "Quite shocking. We were just here yesterday and made a few purchases."

Investigators worked well into the night collecting evidence.

Police are still trying to determine a motive. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
