BUFFALO -- The Buffalo Planning Board voted Tuesday to table Wegmans plan for a retail building outside its Amherst Street location for another two weeks. At issue, residents want to make sure it fits in with the neighborhood and the Planning Board is taking Common Council member Joseph Golombek's recommendation for Wegmans to meet with the Good Neighbors Planning Alliance.

"It's our first new building in about fifteen-twenty years. Lets make it great and not look suburban," said Grant-Amherst Business Association President Mark Kubiniec.

Wegmans plans on constructing the building, which will house a wine and liquor store, on 15,000 square feet of green space in front of the supermarket located at 601 Amherst Street. The plan has been in the works for months and Wegmans officials said they have worked closely with the public. They are currently on their 3rd design.

Another issue is traffic. Some nearby residents are fearful that the new store will add to the already existing traffic problem along Amherst Street.

"I've had an accident there," said Walter Karpio. "Just driving out of my driveway I've been hit. It's just a congestion problem and I don't know how they're going to solve that."

Wegmans said through traffic studies and working with the City of Buffalo, there are plans to alleviate traffic build-up around the store and make it more pedestrian friendly.

A public meeting is scheduled for Tuesday night between Wegmans officials and the Good Neighbors Planning Alliance. It will take place at 6:15 p.m. at the Northwest Buffalo Community Center at 155 Lawn Avenue in Buffalo.

Wegmans is expected to go before the Buffalo Planning Board again in two weeks.
