EAST AURORA, NY--One teenage girl had to fulfill a community service requirement for her high school.
But she took it one step further, organizing an entire fundraiser to benefit a local charity.
Karleigh Volk started the "Skate for Skates" event Sunday afternoon in East Aurora, with proceeds benefiting Hasek's Heroes. The fundraiser included an open skate, basket raffles, games and prizes.
Dozens of people came to support the charity, which gives less fortunate children hockey lessons and equipment. Volk said she is grateful the community supports a great cause.
"It benefits us because we get to be here and have a good time but it also benefits everyone else in the community because all the money is going back", said Volk.
Volk says she hopes to inspire others to perform community service in the future.
