LANCASTER, N.Y. — U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand is introducing a new manufacturing act to Congress. If passed, it may benefit Western New York's developing high-tech and clean-energy manufacturers.
The goal of the Made in America Manufacturing Act is to make the U.S. a global leader in specialized manufacturing.
Manufacturers would compete for federal funding of low-interest loans and job training programs in order to build a local pool of specialized laborers.
It's a move the president of Harper International says is crucial to keeping business at home.
"By having that trained work force, and very highly technically trained workforce, then, that propels our business," said Charles Miller, Harper International president. "So we bring the business back here instead of it going to Germany or Japan, for example."
The Erie County Executive and members of the Buffalo Niagara partnership are backing Gillibrand's bill, saying that a manufacturing city like Buffalo would be poised to benefit greatly from this legislation.
