Police are investigating a bus crash in Eden that sent four people to the hospital Wednesday morning. YNN's Kaitlyn Lionti tells us investigators say if it wasn't for the bus driver's actions, the accident could have been worse.

EDEN, N.Y. — Route 62 in Eden was closed Wednesday morning after witnesses say a car crossed the center line and hit a Carrier Coach bus carrying 12 young adults from group homes.

"The car appeared to cross over, I don't know if he was passing yet, I don't know if he fell asleep, I can tell you alcohol does not play a role. There was a witness behind the bus, also, who said the vehicle just abruptly came over the center," said Lt. John McCarthy of the Eden Police department.

Police say the incident forced the bus into a ditch, and say the bus driver did a superb job handing the situation.

"He really limited the injury that would have occurred, he actually put the bus into a very deep ditch, he couldn't go any further to the right once he hit the earth embankment there. But the driver did a real good job," said McCarthy.

The driver of the car had to be extricated from his vehicle, and was taken to ECMC along with three people from the bus.

Police say the based on where the crash happened it could have been much worse.

McCarthy said, "The accidents are low, but it's just in that straightaway because of the speeds, it's a 55 mph zone, they're usually horrific crashes though, when they do occur."

The investigation continues and no charges have been filed at this time.

The driver of the car is listed in fair condition at ECMC. No word on the other three people taken to the hospital.
