WNY Celebrates Beginning of Hanukkah

  • Text size: + -

AMHERST, NY--Western New York's Jewish Community came out to celebrate the first night of Hanukkah Saturday by lighting one of the tallest menorah's in the country.

It was a festival of lights in the community gathered to light a menorah
outside of Dr. Jeffrey Meilman's office on Maple Road.

Songs, dancing and traditional Jewish doughnuts were also part of the tradition, which organizers say has helped shed light on the Jewish Faith.

Rabbi Moshe Gurary of Chabad House said, "And the idea is to really spread the light, the light of Chanukah, the light of freedom, the light of religious freedom, and that's why it's the festival of lights. It really illuminates the dark, it illuminates the holiday".

A new light on the menorah will be lit each day for the eight days of Hanukkah. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
