Shoppers Encouraged to Spend Local

Black Friday has come and gone but the deals are still being offered on the local level.

As YNN's Kate McGowan explains, 'Small Business Saturday' is all about supporting your local mom-and-pop shop.

WESTERN NEW YORK -- Local shop owners are inviting people to come in and see all they have to offer.

"We just put that extra special touch and we have amazing different flavors of cupcakes," said the manager of Cupcake Orchard.

Take for instance Cupcake Orchard in Orchard Park, a shop that offers gourmet cupcakes with flavors you may not find in a supermarket chain.

"Mixes between chocolate and vanilla. Our specialty ones for November are sweet potato, caramel apple and pumpkin," the manager said.

'Small Business Saturday' is a day for mom-and-pop shops to shine. It's sandwiched between Black Friday and Cyber Monday and though many shoppers may choose to spend on those days, business owners encourage consumers to keep local in mind.

"Small Business Saturday, yes that's been great and it's just nice to remind people and make them aware of small businesses and that there are a variety of places you can shop at. It's just a totally different experience than going to the mall or big box store," said Beverly Vidler from Vidler's 5 & 10.

"I like buying unique presents, not run of the mill kinds of stuff," said one customer.

Many shop owners said that they're enthusiastic that customers are coming in and supporting them, as all money spent goes right back in to the local economy.

Vidler said, "Kind of think about where your dollars go."

Vidler's in East Aurora typically gets around 3,000 customers on 'Small Business Saturday' and its owners said the shop relies on the sales from this day.

Some customers couldn't get enough of the one of a kind gifts on sale.

A customer said, "Shopping early on a Saturday because we don't want to hit the major crowds coming in from wherever."

Another commented, "I've only gotten down this one aisle and I've only been here for 20 minutes already!" ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
