SALAMANCA, N.Y. — He's only up less than a hundred votes, with more than 200 absentee ballots yet to be counted.

Yet in a race to close to call mathematically, former two term mayor Democrat Carmen Vecchiarella declared victory Tuesday night in his bid for mayor of Salamanca.

"It's a good win, I know we worked the absentees hard so its, you know, to lose, basically I'd have to lose all the absentees," he said.

Vecchiarella has 1,081 votes, while Republican candidate Larry Butler has 982.

Despite the close race between the candidates, Butler still conceded Tuesday night.

"Well, disappointed of course, I know I have some absentee ballots, but I don't think I have enough to overcome the difference, I think they'll break more for him than for me," said Butler.

Election officials in Cattaraugus County reported a steady turnout throughout the day Tuesday with little to no problems at the polls.

"It's great to see so many people and theres a lot of young people and first time voters this year so that is a great thing too," said Mary Winship, Election Inspector.

The eventual winner will replace Democrat Jeffrey Pond, who has reached his term limit, after serving nine years as mayor. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
