When you make a trip to the grocery store, do you leave your kids behind? It might not be a good idea, especially when it comes to their health.
Keirnan Patterson is a typical adolescent.
"My favorite junk food is potato chips."
Too much of the yummy treats causes concern from many adolescents.
"I feel slow when we run the mile in school. I'm the last kid to finish. It's sad, I feel like I could do better but I can't," said Keirnan.
To help kids gain insight on nutrition, some markets are providing tours, giving shopping tips to families.
"I feel like I do need to lose weight and get into shape for the well being of myself," said Keirnan.
"Peoples’ general lack of time to pay attention to what they are eating. There are a lot of easy foods to grab and go that contain twice as many calories and twice as much fat and definitely a lot of extra sugars," said Dianne Fagan, RD, Price Chopper community dietician.
The market tour mixes in fun and national education; it's run like a scavenger hunt. An RD helps kids use this Nutrition Made Easy score sheet to find foods that rate high based on a nutritional scoring program called Nuval.
"Nuval is a scoring system, it scores food on a scale from 1 to 100, 100 represents the best nutrition and one is least. The higher the number, the better the nutrition," said Fagan.
The aisles visited are those which contain foods the kids favor. For example, the cereal aisle. They check out the scores which are located below the food items, Lucky Charms is at a low 25, Honey Nut Cheerios climbs to 27 , a bit better, but the best score is Cheerios at 37. The kids spend plenty of time looking for a fruit or vegetable to try, most of the food in this area scores in the 90s.
"From the Price Chopper tour, we know where to go, the better places to get better foods and help my eating habits too," said Keirnan.
They are also taught to eat a variety of food, treats in moderation, and the best part, they get to keep the food that scored high on the nutrition score.
