It's the holiday season, a time to eat, drink and be merry. But if you indulge too much, you may gain a few of unwanted pounds. Marcie Fraser has some helpful tips.
Holidays often mean a lot of parties and a lot food. The first weight loss tip is to park yourself away from the buffet table.
"You can burn over 120 calories an hour just standing there and talking to your family and friends, away from the table. You don't have to be looking at it and being tempted the entire time," said Ellie Wilson, Price Chopper Senior Nutritionist.
A little change of attitude can make a big difference. The mantra should be: ‘I don't want dessert’ rather than ‘I can't have dessert.’
"This a 'keeping your head in the game,' if you choose to not have something, you made a choices, ‘I don't have that’ versus ‘I can't,’ I can't makes it feel as though you are deprived and you are not allowed to have that," said Wilson.
What you eat off of can make a difference of a few pounds.
“That smaller plate, that eight inch plate versus the eleven inch plate that we currently use. If you go to that eight inch plate, you automatically saved yourself forty percent of the food that you would have eaten on the eleven inch plate,” said Wilson.
What you add to a cocktail can lower the calories.
"Have something handy like seltzer, so you can make something sparkle, turn it into a sparkling drink, you lower the calories, you manage the calories from alcohol," said Wilson.
One of the behavior tips has to do with your personality. Learn to be more assertive. If you are in a restaurant or a bar, ask your server if there is any way to reduce the calories in your meal or your cocktail. If it has heavy cream for example, ask if they can go for light cream or even regular milk.
"You can get latte with fat free milk. You can get a White Russian with regular milk rather that half and half, ways to dial down calories but still keep the treat you like to have once or twice a year in place," said Wilson.
